Grand Rivers Humane Society (GRHS) focuses on finding loving homes for Grand Valley homeless local cats and dogs. We are the only Grand Junction humane society that focuses solely on LOCAL homeless pets. There is a national overpopulation crisis affecting Mesa County Animal Services and GRHS has stepped in to help navigate and alleviate this crisis. Donations go towards life-saving surgeries for injured pets, veterinary evaluations for sick pets, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and foster supplies. Unfortunately, adoption fees do not cover the extensive costs required for our nonprofit humane society to continue life-saving work. Donations are greately appreciated and go directly towards saving the lives of homeless cats and dogs of the Grand Valley.

Testimonials

"It will be 6 months tomorrow that we adopted Sentry at one of your Chow Down events. We renamed him Delta, and he is such a sweet boy! He has settled in so nicely! He travels great, enjoys playing with his big sister Riley, and LOVES to play fetch! We love him dearly and are blessed to have him! Thank you for all that you do for the sweet dogs and cats that need help!"

"Thank you for the work and love you gave him (Preston) - I truly believe he wouldn't be adjusting so well without it. You are a true blessing to any animal truing to find their way and it really does show. My family will forever be grateful to you for that. I know it must be hard to see him go but he wouldn't have been ready without you and we hope you keep it going and shepherd more dogs to their forever homes."

"Thank you for all of the love and generosity you showed Charlie. He is such a great dog and I can tell he has been well cared for. He is lucky to have landed at your house for foster care. Your organization does great work, is responsive to adopters, and the fosters are the unsung heroes."

Giving Activity

Mission

Saving Mesa County (CO) homeless cats and dogs since 2005 by providing spay and neuter surgeries, immunizations, extensive lifesaving medical treatment, and foster homes prior to finding them loving forever homes.

To achieve this mission, Grand Rivers Humane Society works closely with Mesa County Animal Services, local veterinarians, and loving volunteers and fosters.

Background Statement

Grand Rivers Humane Society was formed in 2005 by Dr. Joseph Maruca, with the intention to find loving homes for Mesa County's homeless pets. Dr. Maruca was particularly committed to eliminating euthanasia of healthy adoptable cats and dogs at the Mesa County Animal Services shelter.

Dr. Maruca worked tirelessly, holding adoption events every Saturday and Sunday, transporting dogs and cats to safety...doing whatever it took to save lives. It took five years but - in 2010 - Dr. Maruca's dream was realized when Mesa County Animal Services stopped euthanizing healthy, adoptable cats and dogs.

Between 2021-2022, Grand Rivers Humane Society helped 1,035 homeless cats and dogs find their forever homes with the hard work of volunteers and two part-time employees at the Kitty Korner location in Grand Junction, CO.

Grand Rivers Humane Society is a Colorado nonprofit corporation in good standing and is licensed by the Colorado Pet Care Animal Facilities Act (PACFA).
